A Prayer Rug for Mary

I made this prayer rug for Mary Macrina Cowan, my colleague at Andover Newton Theological School in the 1990s. She had recently changed her name when she became a member of a lay religious order. Mary Macrina devoted her life to prayer and reflection as well as artistic expression of the spiritual life. This rug was to provide her a place for kneeling and praying. She made many contributions to the Theology and Arts program at Andover Newton. Through a contact of hers we were given a large gift of Italian mosaic tiles. This became the medium used to teach me and many others the craft and art of mosaics. When we retired from Andover Newton I was invited to take with me a sample of many of the colors. These contributed to my work for several years.
