Principles of Music

Melody

This is the first of three batik pieces on cotton that were made for our guest room at our home, Overbrook, to honor Bill’s mother, a singer. They depict the primary elements of music – Melody, Rhythm, and Harmony. The original was purchased by Karin Gunnemann. This is a second version. 27″ x 27″. 1993.

Rhythm in Silk

Rhythm

This batik shows some of the patterns of rhythm. The overall piece is the primary “one beat.” Then it is divided diagonally into the “two beat.” “Three beats” are represented by the circles. Various combinations are embedded in the background with brush strokes of different colors. They are combined into other rhythmic patterns, such as five/four, six/eight, etc.

Harmony is the third of three batik pieces on cotton that were made for our guest room at Overbrook to honor Bill’s mother, a singer. They whole set depicts the primary elements of music—Melody, Rhythm, and Harmony. 27″ x 27″ 1993
